Directors

Brice Winston is a world-class professional tenor sax player who brings a wealth of performance and touring experience from his work with Terence Blanchard, Herbie Hancock , Nicholas Payton, Wynton Marsalis and many others.  While living in New Orleans, he also taught in the jazz studies departments of University of New Orleans, Dillard University and New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (high school).  Brice works with the high school combos to challenge students, help them advance to higher levels and fine-tune their abilities.

Brice focuses on individuality of performances - teaching theory, composition and encouraging the creativity that is the essence of Jazz.

Dr. Kelland Thomas is a versatile musician comfortable in a variety of genres, and has appeared frequently throughout the Southwest with the Original Wildcat Jass Band, Descarga, and as lead tenor saxophone with the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra. He is the musical director for Salsarengue, a new ensemble specializing in Latin jazz, Salsa, and Dominican Merengue. He performs regularly throughout Arizona and has backed up such acts as The Four Tops, Diane Schuur, Manhattan Transfer, The Spinners, Sam Moore, Jimmy Heath, and Marcus Belgrave.

Michael Harrison is an accomplished trumpeter and music educator. He currently serves as Director of Bands at Utterback Middle School in Tucson where he is responsible for over 160 students in 5 ensembles. In addition to his teaching duties, Michael demonstrates great versatility as a musician,  regularly performing with such groups as the Tucson Symphony, Roadrunners Traditional Jass Band, Salsarengue, Tucson Pops, and the Tucson Jazz Orchestra. His experiences as a member of the Disney All-Star Band as well as touring with the Glenn Miller Orchestra have allowed him to work with such notable artists as John Clayton, Wayne Bergeron, Bill Watrous, and Horace Silver.

Dedicated to jazz performance and education, Michael aims to pass on the secrets to unlocking the language of jazz, and in doing so hopes to instill a deep understanding of and appreciation for this unique art.

Dan Griffin is a professional Tucson-based guitarist and educator who has toured the world and performed with numerous musical luminaries such as Steven Tyler, Chris Issak, Donny Osmond and jazz great Steve Laury.  Upon returning to Tucson, he quickly established a reputation as one of the finest guitarists and educators in the city.  Mr. Griffin has also authored 2 method books for guitar, Melodic Development Through Intervallic Compounds and Open String Voicings for Jazz Guitar.

Rob Boone is a trombonist and pianist who is a member of many bands, including Original Wildcat Jass Band, Tucson Jazz Orchestra, Tucson Symphony, Tucson Pops Orchestra, Big Band Express, Tucson Latin Jazz Orchestra, LA Jazz Workshop Big Band, Paradox, Sam Taylor, Twilight, New School, Pete Swan Trio, Robin Horn Band, Rob Boone Trio, Hank Hirsh Quintet, Arthur Statman Sextet.  He has performed with stars such as Ray Charles, Moody Blues, Linda Ronstadt, Temptations, Natalie Cole, Bob Mintzer, and Clark Terry.  He has also played in many national touring shows such as Lion King, Chicago, Producers, Full Monty, A Chorus Line, Rat Pack and High School Musical.  Additionally, he is a writer and producer, teaches trombone and jazz piano and has taught jazz studies at Mesa Community College and the University of Arizona.

Pete Swan is a jazz drummer based in Tucson Arizona, who has performed with a long list of notable artists including Bud Shank, Bobby Shew, Kim Richmond, Orbert Davis, and Brice Winston.  Pete also performed in the Walter Bridges Big Band and the Clayton Hamilton Big Band.  He has studied with Mel Brown, Joe LaBarbera, Jeff Hamilton, and Art Frank.

He directed the Pima College jazz band program for five years and led numerous concerts with various guest artists, including pianist Marcus Roberts, and Chuck Mahronic, and guitarist John Stowell.  He has been on the faculty of the Centrum Jazz Workshop, formerly the Bud Shank Jazz Workshop, performing in a trio setting in the vocal section of the camp.  Pete has been running a jazz concert and jam session every Sunday night at the Old Pueblo Grille. The Pete Swan trio consists of Rob Boone on piano and Craig Faltin on bass.

Moisés Paiewonsky, a professional trombonist, is currently the Assistant Professor of Music (Trombone) at the University of Arizona where, in addition to maintaining a strong studio and directing the trombone ensemble, he is the Associate Director of the UA Studio Jazz Ensemble. Mr. Paiewonsky has performed with a wide variety of legendary jazz artists including Terry Gibbs, Chris Potter, Wayne Bergeron, Shelly Berg, Ed Calle, Dave Steinmeyer, Vince DiMartino, Byron Stripling, Matt Niess, and Jack Wilkins. In addition, he has been the winner or finalist of numerous competitions including the 2005 and 2003 National Trombone Solo Competitions, the 2004 International Trombone Quartet Competition, the 2002 International Trombone Solo Competition. Mr. Paiewonsky has also served on the faculty of the Interlochen Center for the Arts and currently serves on the faculty of Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp.
